Escape on Alcatraz – Before ever having visited Alcatraz Island, I had always envisioned the ‘Rock’ to be the cliched dark island emerging from the fog and perhaps it was.

It was the prison gardens in full bloom however that blew me away and the stories of the inmates who tended and cared for them.  It is this that makes me believe that this was their escape on the island, away from the cold concrete cells – somewhere they could come for solitude.  These images of flowers and plants beyond the prison walls represent that escape.

In the 1979 movie ‘Escape from Alcatraz‘ starring Clint Eastwood, (which was about escaping in the literal sense), flowers like the poppy and chrysanthemum are used to symbolise hope and freedom.

Sometimes we all, like the inmates of Alcatraz, need a little escape in our lives each day.
